If there is consensus about the development of the human world in the 21st century, it is that change is happening, fast. With the power that innovations bring us, we have extraordinary power to manipulate the way we live in the world and the way we live together. Run or save? Paper, plastic, or pdf? Cancel or Continue? It’s easy to think that the only way to keep up is to move fast, to click as often and immediately as the popups pop or consume as much as the feeds provide. But our best shot as a community and as a species might be to slow down and truly consider some of the questions that flash across our screens and eyes every day.
As a scientist, I know that a living being lives and dies by how it adapts, tolerates and manipulates its environment and resources. As a human, I know that I live and die by what I love, create and share with my kin and my home. As a writer, I work to bring both perspectives to my essays and articles.
The goal of this blog is to engage a wider conversation about what it means to be human in the 21st century. If you can read this, you are qualified and welcome to contribute. I’ll post about what has me scratching my head today. Please tell me more about what inspires you and makes you curious, too.
